The 2014 North American cold wave was an extreme weather event affecting parts of Canada and the United States east of the Rocky Mountains,[5] extending as far south as Central Florida,[6] and Northeastern Mexico. An Arctic cold front, initially associated with a nor'easter on January 2, tracked across Canada and the United States, resulting in heavy snowfall. Temperatures fell to unprecedented levels due to the front, and consequently low temperature records were broken across the U.S., leading to business, school, and road closures, as well as mass flight cancellations.[7][8][9][10] The low temperature at O'Hare International Airport in Chicago was −16 °F (−27 °C) on January 6. The previous record low for this day was −14 °F (−26 °C), set in 1884 and tied in 1988.[9][20] The National Weather Service adopted the Twitter hash tag #Chiberia (a portmanteau of Chicago and Siberia) for the cold wave coverage in Chicago.[21]
In other words it was FREAKING COLD....and really it hasn't stopped. It is supposed to be a high of -2 degrees again on Monday. Our heating bill doubled on our last statement. It's crazy. But, we found ways to enjoy the snow even from inside as to not lose any digits to frostbite. Today, we made marshmallow shooters!
Final snow totals had to be around 16-20 inches or more.
Trudging through the snow.
"huh, mom?"
Momma's snow angel.
School was closed for 2 days, but our office stayed open...all my patients cancelled but we were open! I dress the kids in warm clothes, snowpants, coat, hat, hood, gloves, scarf, and boots just to go from the door to the preheated car and from the car to the front door of Angela's house. The surprising thing was they didn't complain about being too hot. They were nice and cozy during the polar vortex.
Ralphy fell over and couldn't get up very easily, so I laughed and took a picture. He just laid there looking at me like, "come on crazy lady, help me get up."
Warming by the fire.
We set up an indoor snow day. Table cloth down, snow pants on and wahlah!
Ethan made "rainbow snow" with a medicine dropper and food coloring mixed with water. Kept him entertained for quite some time!
Learning that snow turns into water when it sits inside.
Being very meticulous.
The finished "rainbow snow cakes"
And of course we made fresh snow cones.
And snow ice cream that was surprisingly pretty good!
